Hi, my name is Jam. I know, I know, that’s not what it says on my profile and its not the name that was called for attendance on Monday. The thing is, my parents have never called me by that name. I have always been just “Jam”. The only people to have ever called me “Joan Marie” are people like my teachers and whatnot. To be honest with you, I like being called “Jam” a lot better than “Joan Marie”, though the jokes about it are pretty sad. Stuff like, “Your name’s Jam? Where’s peanut butter?”, or, “Jam? What flavor? Blueberry or strawberry?”. Its gotten to the point where I just fake laugh on the outside and feel dead on the inside.
Other than my name though, there isn’t much else that’s interesting about me. I’m 5’5, 19 years old, and from San Diego. I’ve lived in San Diego pretty much my entire life, but it feels like I still haven’t explored even half of it. I’m a college student, so that also means I’m poor. I’m incredibly sarcastic and my type of humor includes joking about my bank account when there’s only $14.03 left in it and raising my hand when someone asks “is there any trash left?”. My favorite words include “free”, “cancelled”, and “clearance”. I would say I’m religious but the only thing I do consistently is say “the lord is testing me” when someone cuts me off when I’m driving. My hobbies include binge watching t.v shows on netflix, eating and sleeping. Basically my life goal is to become a dog. No, just kidding. I like to cook, read, play video games, and travel.
Like I said, I enjoy travelling. Or at least I like to tell people that. I’ve only been to a couple of places across the states and I’ve never been out of the country. To name a few places, I’ve been to New York, The Grand Canyon, Albuquerque, and recently I went on a four day camping trip in Yosemite. Even though I’ve only been to a couple places, one day I’d like to say that I have travelled almost everywhere. Traveling is actually a big part of my bucket list. By the time I die, I hope to have visited at least five countries in each continent. Maybe it’s because I’m trying to escape all my responsibilities. Anyways, if I can’t travel at all I want to at least visit Greece.
I’m a kinesiology major, and I’m thinking about declaring a minor in psychology because it’s become something I've become very interested in recently. I wish to become a physical therapist, though I am not sure whether or not I want to work with children or the elderly. I plan on volunteering on campus to get a feel for what I want to do. I plan on studying abroad as well so hopefully I can get some experience with that as well. I also picked kinesiology because I’m Asian, so I had to pick something in the medical field or else I would probably be disowned by my family. Physical therapy was as close to medical school as I could get. But I made sure to stay away from the Filipino stereotype of wanting to be a nurse and dating someone in the military.
I have two half siblings, one boy and one girl. I’m the youngest, with my brother being 30 and my sister 32. My parents are divorced but that aint a surprise since we live in California. I live at home with my mom, so I commute to school everyday. My friends are also a very important aspect of my life. No matter how busy we are always make sure to meet and catch up, so I’m very blessed to have all of them in my life. A lot of my favorite moments with my friends involve times where we are traveling. We have made countless trips to LA and we’ve also been to a hot air balloon festival in New Mexico. A lot of my friends go to school away from San Diego, and by a lot of my friends I mean 4 out of the 6 friends I have. In all seriousness, I'm so happy that no matter how far apart we are, we are all still very close.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed reading about me. I also hope that you realize by now that I like to make people laugh by making fun about different aspects of my life. Thanks for reading!
Hi Jam C:
ReplyDeleteI've never called anyone with unique nickname as yours. It's really cute, hopefully professor Flewelling picks up on your nickname! Girl I am with you on the traveling! I read you wanted to see Greece and all that came to mind were authentic gyros, maybe it's because I'm hungry right now but still. As much as I want to travel I am also with you on the broke college student life, but I am planning to visit Japan spring break for the cherry blossom festival! I don't know if that ever crossed your mind but you should check it out as well, if you haven't yet! I heard it was beautiful and plus you can hit all of the vending machines in Japan, if that interests you! You sound like a very adventurous person. I hope you get to visit a majority of places you want to see! Hoping that broke college student life doesn't stop you!

It is nice to know that there is a Kinesiology major in the class. My sister graduated from that department just last year. I hope you are enjoying the classes as much as she did. I enjoyed reading your first blog, but I would like to hear more about your camping trip to Yosemite. That park is one of my favorite travel destinations; partly because it is a beautiful park and partly because I am a fan of John Muir. However, I have never had the opportunity to camp there. I hope that in one of your future blogs that you will describe your time there in more detail, because I would be very interested in hearing about all of the things you did there. I was also glad that you mentioned in your blog that you enjoy sarcastic humor. There are too few people who truly appreciate sarcasm.

Finding people that have mastered the art of sarcasm is refreshing to hear as I often run into people in life who do not understand that I myself am being sarcastic. Kinesiology sounds very interesting though I know nothing about the subject. I like your nickname, Jam. Do not worry, I am full of dad jokes and will surely make you cringe with my jokes about your nickname... Jammaking me think.
ReplyDeleteHey hey hey Jam! That’s a cool nickname by the way. I’m Filipino too and I think it’s so funny you brought up the medical field thing. Both of my parents are nurses, but luckily my parents aren’t like most– I actually decided to pursue physical therapy on my own. The fact that you feel like you haven’t explored half of San Diego is part of the reason I love going to school here. I still have yet to go on a hike. That’s so basic though, like do I actually have to hike to see a rock shaped like a potato then take a picture like I’m falling off of it? It’s kind of crazy that we have so much in common. You’re actually really funny if you didn’t know. I know I’m hilarious, but people just don’t know it. Reading your blog reminded me of my younger sister who always has me dying laughing. I’m excited to read your next posts.

Hi Jam!
ReplyDeleteThat's a cute nickname and very different. Don't we all feel the same way about our bank accounts? I swear if I ever had money in my account, it just ends up going back to school. I'm so jelly (;) ) about the places you traveled to. the farthest I have ever been is probablY from LA to Tijuana. I hope to travel to other countries but let's see how my bank account is in the future! I am not Asian (Mexican) but, I kind of had to pick the medical field also (Well mainly just one that had a good career in the future) and physical therapy actually sounds pretty interesting. I love how you always try to stay in touch with your friends because my high school friends were really close to me and they had to move away also except one. We have not really hung out properly after or caught up on how each of us were doing, which kind of sucks but what can you do? So, I am glad that you're still keeping in touch with them!

Hi Jam!
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your post. It was very uplifting and didn't bore me one bit. I laughed at least once in every paragraph you wrote and that's pretty awesome. The way you use humor is very clever since no one really sees it coming until you make the joke/get to the punchline.
Traveling all around the world is a dream that most people have and it's really great that you're so passionate about fulfilling your lifetime bucket list. I really do hope that you get to visit each and every place/country on your bucket list and if I ever win the lottery, I'll make sure to fund your travels so make sure you always keep in touch with me.
I also noticed that the previous comments on your post talked about your nickname and a couple of them even attempted to make yet another pun of your name. I admit, I laughed at all of them. I'm drinking tea right now as I'm typing this and I thought about your nickname. I say your name almost everyday so I never think about it, but when I sipped on my tea a few seconds ago, I chuckled a little bit because now that I think about it your nickname is really cute.
Thanks for the great read!
